Mark Haley has long been a staple of the South Bend community. As Manager of the Silver Hawks from 2005-2014, 'Hales' was three times named the Midwest League Manager of the Year, while making the playoffs eight times, and wining one Championship. Haley first came to South Bend as a coach of the White Sox (1991-92) and returned again with the Silver Hawks in 1995.

Now, Haley is left to battle through a tough recovery process, far greater than any on the diamond. In early 2024, he endured a subdural hematoma post-surgery to repair a cerebrospinal fluid or CSF leak. This resulted in a life-or-death medical emergency which required five brain surgeries. He had spent over 6 weeks in intensive care and now has to do some extensive rehabilitation. While the surgeries saved his life, this has left him and his family fighting an uphill physical, emotional, and financial battle.
